Calendar of Engaged Buddhist Events

This calendar has been dormant for a while now…. Please let me know if you are interested in seeing it being revived and click here if you’d like to support my efforts to spend time on it again.

______________

Ongoing Events/Vigils

Every Friday from 3:30 to 5PM, the East Hawaii Branch of the Buddhist Peace Felowship sits in silence (“showing original peace” as Roshi Aitken would say) in front of the Federal Building in downtown Hilo, Hawaii. We alternate sitting for about 20 minutes and standing for a couple minutes. We have a BPF banner, bell, some cushions and a couple of big umbrellas. We have been doing this for several years. All are welcome.

  5. Pema Chödrön live! Follow a live-stream of Pema Chödrön’s upcoming “Smile at Fear” retreat in Richmond, California (October 15-17.) The event sold out early, but Shambhala has arranged with Pema Chödrön to make her retreat available for “virtual” participation via live-stream video. For more information about this rare opportunity, please go to http://shop.shambhala.com/smile-at-fear.

    • Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for posting this, although I don’t think it would meet the criteria that I would set for an engaged Buddhist event — one that is Buddhist-based (which Pema’s retreat certainly is), and is directly addressing/interfacing with a social issues (which I don’t believe the retreat does). I’m sure it will be a wonderful retreat, just not exactly fitting into this working definition of a socially engaged Buddhist event.

  6. I was just trying out the site— and so just how does a person look at the website and find what might be going on in his/her community. I was looking to see if our weekly BPF sitting in front of the Federal Building here in Hilo, which has been going on for years, was listed, and I couldn’t find a list. Thanks, Jim Johnson

    • Hi Jim,

I do a search across the Internet to find socially engaged Buddhist events, send emails to SEB organizations that I am aware of, and rely on groups to tell me about their events. If you can ask someone from the Hilo BPF group to send me info, or if you want to do that yourself, I am happy to put it up on this site. Better yet, your group could submit this information to the national BPF office, because that’s a good hub for information.

      Thanks for visiting the blog…

Buddhism and the Economic Crisis – Public Meeting
dublin | miscellaneous | event notice Monday May 02, 2011 19:02 by Mark Price – Socially Engaged Buddhists’ Network 086 3454332
What has Buddhism got to offer in relation to the global crisis of capital?
Buddhism and the Economic Crisis – Public Meeting, Friday 24 June, 7pm
Central Hotel, Exchequer St., Dublin 2

Speaker: Ken Jones, author of “The New Social Face of Buddhism”.

The same speaker will lead a workshop entitled “Transforming self – transforming society” on Saturday 25 June, 11am-1pm, at the Central Hotel.

What has Buddhism got to offer in relation to the global crisis of capital? Ken Jones, a prominent proponent of socially engaged Buddhism, offers a provocative analysis of the world economic crisis from the perspective of Buddhist teaching. His lecture on Friday night will be followed on Saturday morning by a short workshop aimed at showing how reflective practice can be integrated with social and political engagement.

These events will be of interest both to Buddhists who wish to put their insights into practice in a social or political context, and to activists who wish to bring clarity of vision to their activities through reflective “inner work”.

Ken Jones is a noted Buddhist scholar, a former Marxist activist, the founder of the UK Socially Engaged Buddhists Network, and author of The New Social Face of Buddhism.

For further details, please contact Mark Price, Socially Engaged Buddhists’ Network, (086) 3454332.

  15. Maia, I’m planning to attend the tar sands action in Washington (Aug 15-Sept 5 or so) as a Buddhist. I’m contemplating how to organize a Buddhist action. Will contact BPF, wanting to network as widely as possible.
